Perrie, Leigh-Anne, Jesy, and Jade aren’t just band mates—they’re best friends! They spill to Seventeen about putting friendship before fame.

“I asked the boys from One Direction how to make it in America and they basically said: ‘be yourself and you can’t go wrong. People know when you’re trying to be someone you’re not. Just be true to who you are.’ So that’s what we’ve been doing!” — Leigh-Anne Pinnock

“We all have each others’ backs and we’re always laughing. I think the secret is to just have fun and enjoy it while it lasts!” — Perrie Edwards

Leigh-Anne Spills The Song that Defines the Group
“I would definitely say ‘Wings’ because it was one of the first songs we wrote together and the message is everything we stand for. We all have experienced people putting us down in the past and people saying we wouldn’t make it. We overcame it.” — Leigh-Anne Pinnock

“They just make me so happy. It sounds cheesy, but they really do! They are my best friends. I could not live without them. I love them to pieces and I never need a break from them.” — Jesy Nelson

“When we met the Spice Girls, Emma Bunton told us to keep being friends because that’s the connection fans love you for.” — Jade Thirwall

Less than 18 months ago, Little Mix won the 2011 series of The X Factor.

The girls have since released a successful album, completed their debut UK tour… and each fallen in love. Now they are bidding to crack America.

We caught up with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Jesy Nelson to see how they’ve been getting on.

YOU’VE started work on the new album. How is it coming along?
Jade: We’re back in the studio writing. I think we’re more confident as writers. It’s exciting not knowing what’s to come. We could be writing today and in a few months’ time it could be a massive hit.

We’re more experienced now. We’ll have the same kind of sound as the last album but be a bit more adventurous and a bit more mature, with more vocals.
I think we’d keep the same uplifting message, like Wings and Change Your Life had. We still want the universal message for our fans. Obviously we’re all loved-up at the minute, which we weren’t last time! So maybe we can do a couple of love songs too.

What was it like working with Missy Elliott on your new song?
Jesy: She’s been my idol since I was about eight, so working with her was a dream come true. She recorded her bit in LA and we did ours in the UK.

But we’re hoping to meet up with her when we go back to America next month. We felt like this song was quite old-school and funky, so we wanted to give it an extra something. We’d also like to work with Nicki Minaj.

What was it like being in America recently?
Perrie: Absolutely insane — better than we expected. We’re going back in May to promote the album, so we’ll do more performances and fan events and see how it goes. It was nerve-wracking being away from home and not knowing how everything was going to pan out. The fan reaction was mental.

Why do you think you’ve been so well received over there?
Perrie: The power of the internet — things like Twitter. All the fans know every lyric, every interview we’ve done. They’ve put in the hard graft to find out who we are and what we’re about.

Leigh-Anne: A lot of girls tell us we’re their inspiration and role models and that is just from us being ourselves.

I think parents see us as their kids’ role models as well because of the inspirational lyrics that we write. Maybe that’s part of it — they love Change Your Life out there because of the message it has. We’ve had parents come up and thank us for giving their children someone to look up to. That’s an amazing feeling.
